We are finishing our year as we began, with self portraits. This time, instead of charcoal, our medium is paint. We are observing Frida Kahlo’s self portraits and symbolism, and incorporating our own personal symbols into our portraits.

Janet Fish Still Life Paintings

This week we will study the work of American artist Janet Fish and her beautiful still-life watercolor paintings. We will create still life drawings through careful observation of fruit, flowers and glass containers.

Line and Space

This month, we are investigating line and space. K-4th graders created three-dimensional line sculptures and 5th-8th graders learned to create the illusion of three-dimensional space in one point perspective drawings. We will continue our exploration of linear perspective with lessons in two-point perspective drawing this week.

Interpret the theme in a personal way. What does having a Catholic education mean to you?

Do you feel that having art classes is an important part of your education?

You may reference artists of the Renaissance to help you interpret the theme.

2-D art must be matted or mounted and be under 24”x30”

Your name, title of work, and grade level must be on the back.

Your work will be judged on content (the theme is clearly expressed in the work) as well as craftsmanship and originality.

Master Palettes: Spotlight on Artists

This month, we will study the paintings of master artists Van Gogh, Monet, and O’Keeffe. Students will emulate the artists’ styles, color palettes, and brush strokes in their own compositions.

December Focus: Printmaking
